Beer Belly Contest – A Short History

February 2, 2008 – 3:49 pm

Beer Belly Contest- sounds weird, doesn’t it? Well, the first time someone told me about it, even I did not believe it. I am a total fitness freak and a belly was the last thing that I would want on my stomach or anyone else’s. I totally disliked the whole concept initially. But well, I must admit now that even though I don’t have a beer belly, I still love to be there at as many of them as I can manage. In case you are wondering what a beer belly contest is all about, I’ll tell you about it in brief.

Although the origin of beer belly contests is not clear but mostly people believe that it started from Gold Coast region in Australia. A group of middle aged men started to drink loads of beer and compare their belly’s just for fun. Slowly it evolved into a popular competition and spread to many other countries.

Except for Islamic countries where alcohol consumption is banned, you’ll find one or the other kind of beer drinking or beer belly contest in the neighborhood at least once in a year. Beer companies also saw a lot of sense in these beer belly contests from marketing point of view and started promoting such beer belly contests. It is estimated that maximum number of beer belly contests are held in USA’s countryside areas. Beer is a very popular drink amongst bikers and especially amongst those who like the noisy and powerful Harley Davidson and the likes.

Most of these riders have a huge built, they like beer and they like to drink it not in terms of just a few cans but crates altogether. Such beer belly contests appeal a lot to these guys. Beer belly contests have now become a commonplace event wherever these bikers assemble for a race or a group ride across the countryside. The competition is held in full public view where judges decide which beer belly is the best based on the size of the belly, height of the person, shine and hardness of the belly. The best belly of course wins loads and loads of beer, what else .

Beer belly contests are now also becoming a routine event in the beer capital of the world, Germany. Oktober Fests are now also becoming the stage for such beer belly contests in Germany where a man’s strength is decided based on the number of steins (a beer mug is also called a stein) of beer he can drink. And the regular beer mugs are by no measure even close to a German stein. A single stein is anywhere between 1 liter to 2 liter. Imagine drinking 4 steins (12-24 cans of beer) a day for just 15 days. If you want to register yourself for any beer belly contest, here’s the trick to become the winner.

But even if you want to be one with a great beer belly, you should exercise your body well so that the muscles remain in good shape from inside even if they don’t from the outside.
